Dance Exams Explained: What Are RAD and IDTA?
Why We Offer Exams (and Why They're Optional)
At New Forest Academy of Dance, dance exams aren't a requirement—they're a potential milestone in a dancer’s journey, there to celebrate hard-earned progress. We offer both RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) and IDTA (International Dance Teachers’ Association) exams, which provide formal structure and recognition. Even so, exams are entirely optional—our students progress at a pace that suits them, and alternative achievements like class awards are available too.
The RAD Pathway: Ballet Excellence
The RAD Graded Examinations span from Pre‑Primary through Grade 8, progressing to Vocational Grades
Graded exams typically include classical ballet, and character dance, such as folk-inspired steps
Typically held twice a year, RAD exams are marked as Pass, Merit, High Merit, Distinction or High Distinction
Class Awards are offered at early levels (Pre-Primary/Primary) - these are group-based and participation-focused, without individual marks
The IDTA Journey: Diverse Styles and Skill-Building
We use the IDTA syllabus for Tap, Modern, Street and Musical Theatre
IDTA offers Rosette, Grade, and Medal tests—starting from early levels and progressing alongside students’ development
These assessments focus on technique, musicality, and performance readiness, and are recognised across UK dance schools
Preparation & Support
Students may receive additional mock exam sessions, and we offer extra coaching and home practice opportunities to ensure confidence and readiness.
We only recommend exams when students are technically prepared and happy—we want exams to be confidence-boosting, not stressful.
Beyond the Grades: Learning Life Skills
Exams are more than just tests—they foster:
Discipline
Resilience
Goal-setting
Performance confidence
A lifelong love of learning the arts
These qualities support students on stage — and in life beyond it.
Not Feeling Exam-Ready?
That’s completely fine. You have other options:
Take an IDTA or RAD class award: timed, group-based, no pressure.
Progress through classes at your own pace.
Focus on enjoyment and personal development, without formal assessment.
