Exams at NFAD

Back of a new forest academy of dance student's head, hair in a bun ready for an exam

At New Forest Academy of Dance, we offer students the opportunity to gain recognised qualifications through RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) and IDTA (International Dance Teachers' Association) examinations — but we know that every dancer’s journey is unique. That’s why exams are entirely optional, and never a requirement for progression within our school.

We believe in supporting every student to learn and grow in the way that’s right for them, whether that includes formal exams, class awards, or simply moving forward in line with their peers.

Our Ethos Around Exams

At NFAD, exams are offered to enrich a student’s dance education, not to create pressure. Our goal is always to help each dancer develop at their own pace, with confidence, creativity and joy at the heart of their training.

Our Exam Approach: Supportive, Personalised and Positive

Exams can be a motivating and confidence-boosting part of a dancer’s development, helping to build:

  • Dedication and resilience

  • Self-discipline and focus

  • Respect for the art of dance

  • Presentation skills and self-confidence

We only recommend exams or class awards when we feel that a student is ready to succeed in a positive and healthy way. These decisions are always made at the teacher’s discretion, with the student’s best interests in mind.

RAD and IDTA Exams Explained

We follow the RAD syllabus for Ballet, offering both:

  • Graded Exams – formal, individual assessments

  • Class Awards – group-based recognition without individual marking

From Pre-Primary Ballet to Vocational levels, RAD offers a clear, age-appropriate progression that helps students grow in strength, artistry and confidence.

For all other styles — including Tap, Modern, Street, and Musical Theatre — we follow the IDTA syllabus, which includes:

  • Rosette Awards (for younger students)

  • Graded Exams

  • Medal Tests and Performance Awards

Due to the unstructured nature of the dance style, contemporary classes at NFAD are currently taught outside of a formal syllabus and do not include exams.

What’s Involved in Preparing for an Exam or Award?

To ensure students feel confident and well-prepared, we require extra coaching alongside regular class attendance. This may include:

  • Mock exams or in-class run-throughs

  • Small group rehearsals

  • Private or semi-private coaching sessions

  • Dedicated home practice

These additional sessions are essential to ensure a positive and successful exam experience, and to help students take pride in their preparation and performance.

When Do Exams Take Place?

We hold formal exam sessions two to three times per year, depending on examiner availability and student readiness. If your child is being considered for an exam or class award, you’ll be contacted directly with further information.

What If My Child Doesn’t Want to Take Exams?

That’s completely fine. Dancers can progress happily alongside their peers through regular classes without taking any formal assessments. We also offer:

  • Class Awards – ideal for students who want to celebrate their progress in a group setting, without the pressure of an individual exam

  • Certificates of Achievement – recognising participation and effort within class

If you have any questions about exams or class awards, please don’t hesitate to speak to your teacher or contact us.
