Dance Styles at NFAD – Finding the Right Class for Your Child (or Yourself)

At the New Forest Academy of Dance, we offer a wide range of classes for children, teens and adults — starting from age 2½, with no upper age limit. Whether you're choosing your child’s first class or exploring something new for yourself, this guide explains the styles we teach, what students can expect, and how to choose the right class.

Student Pathways

Ages 2½–4: Tots & Movers — An Introduction to Dance

Before children progress into specific dance styles, our youngest dancers begin in Tots (age 2½+) and Movers (age 3+).
These classes introduce:

  • rhythm and musicality

  • imagination and creative play

  • coordination and balance

  • simple movement patterns

  • confidence in a friendly group environment

They give children a warm, supported start and help them discover the joy of dance before choosing a style at age 4.

Ballet

Ages: 4–18, plus adult classes | Syllabus: RAD

Ballet is the foundation of our school, offering structure, technique and expressive movement. Students learn:

  • posture, balance and alignment

  • coordination and strength

  • musicality

  • discipline and confidence

We follow the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus from Pre-Primary to Grade 8, plus the vocational pathway and weekly adult classes for beginners, intermediate and advanced dancers.

Tap

Ages: 4–18, plus adult classes | Syllabus: IDTA

Tap is upbeat, rhythmic and great fun. Classes focus on:

  • timing and musicality

  • clear footwork

  • coordination

  • performance confidence

Children progress through the IDTA syllabus, and adults can join our lively beginner, intermediate and advanced weekly classes.

Modern

Ages: 4–18 | Syllabus: IDTA

Modern blends structured technique with expressive movement. Students develop:

  • controlled movement

  • flexibility and strength

  • travelling steps and choreography

  • performance skills

It's a great option for dancers who enjoy variety and want strong technical foundations without the formality of ballet.

Contemporary

Ages: 8–18, plus adult classes

Contemporary encourages creativity, individuality and expressive movement. Classes explore:

  • floorwork and fluid transitions

  • improvisation

  • dynamics and musicality

  • creative problem-solving in movement

We offer dedicated weekly classes for ages 8–18 as well as mixed-ability adult contemporary workshops.

Musical Theatre

Ages: 4–18

Musical Theatre combines dancing, acting and singing. Students learn:

  • stage presence and storytelling

  • ensemble performance

  • character work

  • musical interpretation

It is ideal for children and teens who enjoy performing, love drama, or want to build confidence in a fun, expressive environment.

Street

Ages: 4–18 | Syllabus: IDTA

Street dance is energetic, expressive and full of personality. Students develop:

  • confidence

  • strong rhythmic ability

  • commercial-style routines

  • freestyle skills

It’s a great option for dancers who prefer an upbeat, relaxed style and enjoy movement with attitude.

Adult Dance at NFAD

We offer a welcoming space for adults of all ages — whether you’re completely new to dance or returning after a break.

Weekly Classes
Ballet (Beginner to Advanced), Tap (Beginner to Advanced) and our popular Stretch, Strengthen & Sculpt class (pay-as-you-go) run weekly during term time. These sessions focus on technique, fitness, creativity and community.

One-Off Workshops
Across the year we also run standalone workshops, with recent and planned sessions including Contemporary, Heels/Commercial, Ballet Repertoire, Fosse-style jazz, Broadway tap and other themed sessions. Ideal for trying something new without a long-term commitment.
