Why Uniform Matters

At NFAD, the right uniform is an important requirement - it sets the tone for class, helps them feel part of the community, and ensures they can dance safely.

  • It prepares students mentally, helping them step into the right mindset for learning.

  • It builds a sense of belonging and team spirit across the school.

  • It supports safety and progress by allowing freedom of movement and enabling teachers to see posture, alignment and technique clearly.

What to Wear for Each Class

Every style of dance has its own uniform and footwear. A full breakdown is available on our Uniform page

Footwear and Studio Guidelines

Each style requires the correct shoes:

  • Ballet: Ballet shoes, with character shoes and pointe shoes at the appropriate stages.

  • Tap: Tap shoes.

  • Modern jazz and Musical theatre: jazz shoes are preferred.

  • Contemporary: Bare feet and to bring socks for floor work

  • Street Dance: Black trainers.

For musical theatre, dark-coloured trainers may be worn if jazz shoes aren’t available – but please remember these must not be outdoor shoes. To keep our studios clean and safe for floor work, only indoor shoes are allowed.

Hair and Jewellery

Long hair should always be tied back neatly and kept off the face and neck so teachers can clearly see posture. Ponytails, plaits, buns or pigtails are all fine. For ballet from Grade 1 upwards, long hair should be in a classical ballet bun – you can watch our step-by-step tutorial [link to tutorial].

Jewellery should not be worn in class. Small stud earrings are acceptable, but hoops and dangly earrings are unsafe. Watches or bracelets should only be worn if pre-approved for medical reasons.

Where to Buy NFAD Uniform

Uniform is available from our sister company, The Movement Market, which offers faster delivery and improved customer service compared to our previous supplier. We’re always happy to advise on sizing and what to purchase.

We also run second-hand uniform sales one of the first Saturdays of every term. These are a great way to pick up pre-loved items in excellent condition, with proceeds going to the Lymington Community Centre.

We really appreciate you supporting your students in their dance education by making sure they arrive ready for class in the correct uniform every week. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about uniform, hair or jewellery - we are always happy to help.
